  • Competencies for NICU Practice Revisions
The practice guidelines have been updated into two journal articles to appear in the fall 2009 and winter 2010 issues of Pediatric Physical Therapy. The first article focuses on clinical training models, clinical competencies, and a decision-making algorithm for neonatal physical therapy practice. The second article describes a theoretical framework, evidence from the literature, and evidence-based practice recommendations for neonatal physical therapy practice.

Much thanks to our task force members, Jane Sweeney (chair), Carolyn Heriza, Yvette Blanchard, and Stacey Dusing for all their hard work on the guideline revisions.

SIG Resources

  • Current Competencies for NICU Practice

The current competencies and guidelines for NICU practice can be found in the following article: Sweeney JK, Heriza CB, Reilly MA, Smith C, VanSant AF. Practice guidelines for the physical therapist in the neonatal Intensive care unit (NICU). Pediatr Phys There. 1999;11:119-132. Since articles are only available online beginning in 2001, to access this article, your best bet is to check your local library or check with work associates who may have back issues of PPT. You can also order a reprint from the British Library Fulfillment Service at www.BL.UK under "Services," then "Information & Resources," then "Articles Direct." The cost is about $12 per article, and fulfillment is quick.
