Anniversary Award

The Anniversary Award was created to recognize members of the Section on Pediatrics who have made outstanding, visionary contributions in an area of pediatric physical therapy, including practice, research, mentoring, or leadership. Nominees should be a current APTA member age 55 or over, and should not have received the Bud DeHaven Award, Jeanie Fischer Award, or Jeanne Hughes Award. Nominees may have received a research award. The nominee does not have to be a former Section on Pediatrics officer, a clinical specialist, or living to receive the award.

The Anniversary Award was first presented in 2003, in conjunction with the Section's 30th Anniversary, and was presented to 30 individuals; henceforth, one award will be presented per year at the Combined Sections Meeting. A plaque with the names of all winners will be housed in the Executive Office of the Section, and the awardees will receive a $100 check.

Section on Pediatrics Advocacy Award

The Advocacy Award honors a member of the Section on Pediatrics who has made an outstanding contribution to pediatric physical therapy, including leadership in the areas of advocacy and government affairs at the regional, state, or national level.

Outstanding Pediatric Clinician Award: PT and PTA

The purpose of the Outstanding Pediatric Clinician Award is to recognize two Section members, a physical therapist and a physical therapist assistant, whose clinical practice exemplifies the work and dedication of pediatric physical therapy practice with children and families. These awards will be presented at the annual Combined Sections Meeting and each recipient will receive a check for $100 and a plaque.

Distinguished Service Award

This award was created to honor outstanding and substantial contributions to pediatrics by an individual outside the Section or by an institution independent of the Section on Pediatrics. Please contact the Executive Office for more information. The award is presented to the recipient at the Section's Awards Reception during the Combined Sections Meeting


 

GE "Bud" DeHaven Award

Nominations are being sought from Section on Pediatrics members for the Bud DeHaven Award for extraordinary service to the Section. The award is named for the first Section Chair, Bud DeHaven, and has been given since 1978. A plaque and $100 is presented to the award winner.

The Section is interested in nominations from the membership. Send a letter with supporting information describing the nominee and his/her contributions to the Executive Office by November 1. The award is presented to the recipient at the Section's Awards Reception during the Combined Sections Meeting

Jeanne Fischer Distinguished Mentorship Award

Nominations are being sought from the Section on Pediatrics members for the Jeanne Fischer Distinguished Mentorship Award. This award was created to recognize contributions in mentorship and clinical teaching. Section membership shall nominate a member for this award for significant, sustained contributions to pediatric physical therapy by mentoring and assisting less experienced colleagues in professional development. The award is presented to the recipient at the Section's Awards Reception during the Combined Sections Meeting

Memorial Fund Scholarship

The Memorial Fund Scholarship was created in 2003 to fund pediatric physical therapists who wish to become Pediatric Clinical Specialists and to honor those physical therapists who are no longer with us but have made a lasting impression on the field of physical therapy. The first honoree is Carol Dichter.

The Memorial Fund Scholarship Committee shall select, from among nominations submitted by Section membership, an active member of the Section to receive this $1000 scholarship award (two awards will be given in 2007 and three in 2008). This money is to be used to fund the member during professional development activities and may be used to pay for PCS exam fees, attendance at the Advanced Clinical Practice Course, or continuing education credits.

Nominees must be active or life members of the Section on Pediatrics and be interested in becoming a Certified Clinical Specialist in Pediatrics. Each nominator shall send a completed nomination form, a curriculum vita of the nominee, and reasons why the nominee is best suited for this award. The award will be presented at the Section’s Business Meeting at APTA’s Combined Sections Meeting each year.

Linda Crane Memorial Lecture Award

Nominations are being sought from the Sections on Pediatrics, Education or Cardiovascular and Pulmonary for the Linda Crane Memorial Lecture Award. This award was created to recognize individuals who have demonstrated excellence in either clinical practice, academic practice or in the area of research and who have demonstrated contributions to the Association through state, section or national involvement.

The award is named for Dr. Linda Crane, whose clinical practice specialty was in the area of pediatric cardiovascular and pulmonary therapy.

The recipient of the award will provide a one hour presentation at Combined Sections Meeting, followed by a written copy of the speech to be published, and will receive a monetary award of $500.

Research Award

The Research Award is given in recognition of a Section on Pediatrics member who has performed sustained and outstanding basic, clinical, and/or education research pertaining to pediatric physical therapy. Evidence must be given that the published body of research materials makes a meaningful contribution to the scientific basis of pediatric physical therapy.

In addition, evidence of one or more of the following should be provided: 1) oral presentations and written articles of the research have been reported to the appropriate audiences, 2) an active attempt to foster research of others, and 3) work has been recognized by receipt of grants.

Submissions should be sent to the Executive Office electronically by November 1, and should include both the name and address of the nominee. The award is presented to the recipient at the Section's Awards Reception during the Combined Sections Meeting.



Thesis/Dissertation Award

The Thesis Award is given as recognition to an active or student member of the Section on Pediatrics who has completed an outstanding research project as partial fulfillment for a master's degree.

The Dissertation Award is given as recognition to an active or student member of the Section on Pediatrics who has completed an outstanding research project as partial fulfillment for a post-professional doctoral degree.

Submit the following electronically, by e-mail or by mailing a disk:

 

  1. A cover letter
  2. A copy of the abstract containing identifying information.
  3. A copy of the study abstract with all identifying information deleted (do not just change the font color).
  4. Evidence that the thesis or dissertation was completed within the past 2 years
  5. A discussion of the relevance of the research to the practice of physical therapy

After screening, an electronic copy of the thesis or dissertation may be requested for review by the Research Committee. Submit abstracts to the Executive Office by November 1. The thesis and dissertation awards are presented to the recipients at the Section's Awards Reception during the Combined Sections Meeting.

Address any questions concerning the application guidelines for the Research, Thesis, or Dissertation Awards to the Chair of the Research Committee.

Section Grants

 

Clinical Research Grant Awards   

Purpose & Deadlines

Four $5,000 awards, two $10,000 awards, and one $30,000 are available to Section to Pediatrics members to assist with a 1-year research study that investigates a question or questions of importance to pediatric physical therapy. The purposes of the grants are to provide funding to assist primarily new physical therapist investigators and to encourage research that will add to the body of knowledge related to improvement of pediatric physical therapy. The $30,000 is earmarked for a planning grant for a multi-site study in early intervention. A request for applications (RFA) and details about this award will be published.
 
The due date for submissions is April 1 and September 1 . The grants can be given to support post-professional thesis or dissertation research. (Monies not awarded after the April submission reviews may be awarded to September submissions.) Calls for submissions are routinely advertised in the Section on Pediatrics Newsletter and in Pediatric Physical Therapy, the Section journal. Proposals must be e-mailed by the due date (or by the following Monday, if the due date falls on a weekend) to be eligible for review. To apply, send two electronic copies of your proposal, one with identifying information (author names, place of research, etc) and one with all identifying information deleted (do not just change the font color) to the Section on Pediatrics’ Executive Office at pediatrics@apta.org.

Foundation for Physical Therapy Pediatric Research Endowment Fund

In late 1995, the Section on Pediatrics entered into an agreement with the Foundation for Physical Therapy to initiate the Pediatrics Research Endowment Fund. The Section established the Fund to strengthen opportunities for physical therapists to engage in significant research pertaining to children. The Fund began with a donation of $50,000 from the Section on Pediatrics and was complemented by sales of the II Step publication, "Contemporary Management of Motor Control Problems." Since then, the Section has continued contributing toward a fully endowed Fund to benefit pediatric research by Section members.

Pediatric Clinical Residency or Fellowship Program Grants

Policy

The Section on Pediatrics will award $4500 per year to assist potential pediatric residency and fellowship programs with the APTA credentialing process. This money will be made available on a �first come, first served� basis in the form of 3 grants in the amount of $1500 each, for reimbursement of the credentialing application fee. Up to three grants will be awarded per year. Applicants will be eligible for only one grant regardless of the number of applicants each year. 

The committee will consider grant applications on a “first-come, first-served” basis in two rounds throughout the calendar year.
 
For the first round, the grant application deadline is March 1.
For the second round, the grant application deadline is September 1.

Application Process

  • The pediatric residency or fellowship program will submit the grant application to the Section on Pediatrics Executive Office within 45 days of submitting credentialing applications to the APTA. The grant application deadline is March 1 for the first round, and September 1 for the second round, of each year.

  • Upon receipt of the program’s credentialing status by the credentialing committee of the APTA, the Education Department will notify the Section on Pediatrics Executive Office.

  • The Section on Pediatrics Residency Grant Subcommittee will notify the pediatric residency or fellowship program that the grant has been awarded by either electronic mail or standard mail sometime after September 1.

  • The Section will then send a reimbursement check for the program’s application fee directly to the applicant contact person.

  • If the Section on Pediatrics Executive Office does NOT receive APTA’s letter acknowledging the residency or fellowship program’s credentialing status within 30 days beyond the announced target date, the residency or fellowship program will forfeit the grant.

Section on Pediatrics Student Essay Application
   for Combined Sections Meeting Registration
  

Policy

The Section on Pediatrics will award the cost of Student member registration for Combined Sections Meeting plus one day per diem for two Student Section members per year. This award will be in the form of reimbursement for the cost of student section member registration and one day per diem for room and board for attendance at CSM.

Criteria for Eligibility

Applicants must be current Section on Pediatrics members and students enrolled in an accredited professional physical therapist/physical therapist assistant education program.

Application Process

  • The applicants will submit the application form to the Section on Pediatrics Executive Office.  The application must be received via electronic mail by the Executive Office by November 1.
  • The application form includes an essay, 300 words or less, double spaced, describing why the applicant is interested in pediatrics and what they see are the benefits of belonging to the Section on Pediatrics.
  • The essays and applications will be reviewed by the Student Subcommittee of the Membership Committee.
  • The Student Subcommittee will notify the Executive Office and the awardee via either electronic mail or standard mail by December 1.
  • While attending CSM, the awardees will be paired with the Student Subcommittee Chair for mentoring while attending the Section Business Meeting and the Section Member Breakfast.
  • Following CSM, the awardees will complete a follow-up essay, 300 words or less, describing what they enjoyed most about CSM, what they experienced at the meetings, and what they learned about the Section that they did not know before attending.
  • The awardees also will submit proof of CSM registration and attendance, along with original receipts for lodging and food up to the amount of $250 (current per diem rate) to the Section on Pediatrics Office at 1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA 22314-1488, no later than March 31 following CSM.
  • The Section on Pediatrics will then mail a reimbursement check for the cost of CSM Student registration to the awardees’ contact address.
  • If the Section on Pediatrics does not receive the awardees’ follow-up essay and proof of CSM registration and attendance by March 31, the awardee forfeits the award.
